The main entrance was still the main entrance but without the breathtaking palm trees. The fully air conditioned place was cooling enough to bring down the heat in me from the walk I took to arrive there. Rows of shops replaced our classes and laboratories while the pathway was still reminiscent of our school corridors where we used to queue up after recess and when they have surprised spot checks!! HOHO..Anyway,the corridor is way bigger ,wider and longer now. Pavilion has 8 floors inclusive of a basemant car park. Well, they have so many floors more than our school. We only had 2 floors the most and the huge hall where we used to have ceremonies and assembly. Sigh. How I miss the old school days .However, when I entered Pavilion , I still feel I am visiting my old school.

Just what we needed, a shopping mall

Ramadhan = fasting
Fasting = Near Syawal
Syawal = need for new clothes
New clothes = shopping
Shopping = shopping malls
Shopping malls = Pavilion

Who haven't read about it?
(Elaine wrote a whatchamacallit just in case you don't know what Pavilion is and been living under a rock for the past couple of months)

Who haven't passed by it while driving on Jalan Bukit Bintang?
(I just did today...reminded me of QV and Federation Square in Melbourne. but somehow, i also saw , juxtaposed on it was our grand old school with its green lawn and lush palm trees)

Who havent been there?
(Me because i'm scared i just might take a chalk and start drawing Office Block and Clinic Block's front facades on the grey-polished-uberposh-boring-like-everyotherbuildinginKL-wall/windows facing Jalan Bukit Bintang)

Who is with me?

bah....

Fellow BBGSians, Pavilion Opening

I opened my Friendster today and received this bulletin from Elaine Yap. Thank you and Elaine for writing this lovely epistle.

As we welcome the new shopping
centre,Pavilion KL occupying the spot
where our majestic, beautiful school
once stood a few years back before it
was demolished. Located in Star Hill
road in the heart of KL's bustling
shopping district; it offers a wide
range of choices in retail experience,
food, beverage and urban leisure.
This building is said to be the world-
class urban development comprising two
luxury residential towers, a
corporative office block and a high
end boutique hotel which all together
add up to a total gross built area of
3.68 million square feet. WOW! Didn't
it ever occured to you, fellow
BBGSians that our school was situated
in such a huge and valuable land? The
1.4 million square feet of net
lettable retail space which house 450
outlets in 6 precincts -Bintang
Circle, Gourmet Emporium, Couture,
Connection, HOME and Seventh Heaven is
like reminiscent of our school days
where our school were divided in few
blocks; the prouse wing; above our
school canteen, the clinic block, our
school hall, gymnasium and great
majestic green field .It is kind of
sad to see our alma mater no
more;somehow replaced by this ultra
posh retail outlet. The main entrance
of the Pavilion reminds me of the main
entrance of our alma mater. Remember
the drive thru area filled with
lush, tall palm tress where our parents
used to drop and fetch us from school?
Well,I surely remember that everytime
I see Pavilion KL now. Remembering how
our school used to be then. When you
happen to be enjoying your shopping
experience at Habib Jewels or your
local dish from Madam Kwan's. Do
remember our alma mater, BBGS within
the walls of Pavilion,KL. In Loving
memory of BBGS, the alma mater that
which once stood at Pavilion, KL and
will always be in our memories.
From,
BBGSian, Class of 1999

BBGS Wiki Update

Just checked the Wikipedia stub relating to our alma mater, and I am pleased to notice that someone has taken the initiative to help update the stub. Here's the copy and paste bulletin I received from Hana on Friendster (this is one of the rare moments when Friendster is useful):

I'm glad to inform all of you that there will be a BBGS Class of '99 reunion on 7th July, 2007 at Bukit Kiara (have yet to confirm the place). It's going to be at night, most probably. So, I inform awal2 la huh so that all of you can plan your time to be able to come on that day.

Will keep you girls posted once I get the confirmed details (like strip dance performance.. hehe, no lah, joking joking) from the organizers - the two cik puan(s)- wan and eeqa. ** In the meantime, pls help to spread the news to other BBGSsian aight. Well, this is my attempt. I have no idea what to write about and there's only so much once can say about her alma matter. So i'll talk about my life and what I've been up to.

It's getting colder here in Melbourne. Scarves and beanies are starting to pop up but there are still people who are wearing shorts and thongs. Trenches and platforms are back in and plenty of sales going around. And my car is getting a much-needed wash from all the rain. We really do need rain. Water levels are lower than 40% and it's not going to last the next summer if there are no top-ups from winter rains. It's quite worrisome.

Final year uni is pretty tough and stressful. I have four assignments all due in the next four weeks, have to organise two presentations; one next week and another the week after. At least I get a break in a month. Besides juggling school, I have a very busy social life that consists of dinners, parties, engagements and weddings. I have attended four weddings this year and I'm going broke.

So far, I've had two offers to start up a band. One from the arena of drum and bass, and the other from someone who has a lot of metal influence. I have yet to reply to the latter.

Last week, I met up with a guy that has caught my attention. He's a muso and is quite the gentleman. And I received a pair of hand-made earrings after giving a stall owner a 15 minute massage. She was a total stranger and very weird.

This week...hmm...has yet to start.

Beyond Borders

Oops! You can view it here. You can imagine how excited I was to find our alma mater on Wiki. Imagine my disappointment when I saw how short the entry was. As happy as I am that someone actually submitted a Wiki about BBGS, I feel that it could have been a lot longer, and perhaps even more in-depth than that. So, what did I do next? I opened a Wiki account myself so I could edit the stub myself.

As I'm working on the stub whenever I could find the time (so far I've added the school anthems both in English and Malay, the Centenary Song, and a short introductory box), I'd like everyone's input on this, especially people who had been in the school a lot longer than I have. If you wish to contribute any useful and in-depth information about BBGS, feel free to email me. If you'll take a look at Wikis of St. John's and Victoria's Institution, you can see that they have a more in-depth entry than our school. So, ladies - let's show some school spirit and Wiki our school.

Btw, does anybody have a proper .jpeg or .gif image of our school badge?

NB: "Officially" BBGS Class of '99 Blog

Whew! It's finally been done!

When I first started the blog, I thought it'd be cool to have a class blog like the class website. However, I've been receiving a lot of feedbacks from the rest of the schoolmates, telling me that they wished they had a class website or a blog they can check into as well. Nearly a year later, after a lot of consideration and web traffic monitoring, I decided that, hey... let's make that dream real!

The blog formerly known as the 5Sc1 Blog was spruced up and a name change took place. But something's wrong. Although the blog screams out "BBGS Class of '99", the URL still was glaringly "http://5Sc1.blogspot.com". Being new to the Blogspot dashboard, I couldn't figure out how to change the URL. Thankfully, I finally solved that problem... you'd be surprised how easy it actually is to change the URL of your blog on Blogspot. Duh, I'm an idiot.

I'm really happy the way the blog is blossoming. We now have Dayang and Deborah, former 5Sc5 and 5Sc2 respectively, on the blogging team. Both have contributed an article of their musings about our beloved school. Kudos, you two! We had Alia and Swee Lin on the team previously, but since Blogspot's drastic change from their Beta version (and also some major changes in their life - i.e career-wise), we've lost them. Hopefully they will make a return someday. *wink*

I am still looking for more interested bloggers, though. The more, the merrier. Since she is studying in SMK Seri Bintang Selatan (SBS), i passed SMK Seri Bintang Utara (SBU) to get to her.

SBU, seems to pride itself still as BBGS. SBS is a mere second fiddle to SBU and their claims to be part of BBGS are repressed by SBU. Since neither SBU or SBS is in the rank of CBN, SJI or VI anymore, i guess they just needed to have a common enemy; each other.

I was amused when i saw boys wearing the BBGS tshirt, with its green and white diagonal lines running vertical on the left side and with BBGS script on its back.

Cute. "They still have the tshirt, maybe i should get a new one for myself" i asked myself.

and then i was disgusted when i realise, its after school and they were going home. Tshirts are loose, outside of pants. Girls and boys, they all had their tshirt loose outside of their pants!!!

Now, to a mere common observer, they might not get it, tshirt loose and walking home in their PE attire, whats the big deal?. But to me, it was much more.

BBGS was more than a school and a building, wasnt it? it was more of its spirit, traditions and the personality it possessed. This include all the rules we detested, and subsequently break with imaginative excuses or simply with no excuses at all (ye rebels!). Over time, i realise that those iron-grip rules and traditions was what have shaped my ideologies and perceptions of things.

Black ribbons on assembly day. White or black on others.

I still hold on to rubbish in my hand while keeping a look out for a dustbin to dispose them. if i c ant find a dustbin, then it gets a bit tricky as i got guilt on one hand, and (most time) a yucky rubbish on the other.

And no, i do not walk around town wearing gym pants. Not only because its a fashion dont, but because i was taught to change into my still sweet smelling dry baju kurung thus, looking respectable and decent when i walk out of school and at the same time carrying the reputation and respect to the school outside. Plus, its more hygienic to change into something clean.

Changing from PE clothes into our school uniform unless with clear reasons to why not is one of the rules that were strictly enforced in BBGS during our times. Especially for those wearing shorts. I understand the reasons now. So to see blatant disregard of such rules that in essence among the things that shape the true BBGS, is shocking and dissapointing.

Even if the rules still apply, i didnt see the prefects doing anything about it. an even more shocking lack of enforcement.

So when rules and traditions have changed, the eternal BBGS spirit no longer live in the new school(s). Only the name. But what is a name without a spirit. An empty shell of a school , just another government initiative to produce "educated" citizens among the other name-ful but essentially, nameless schools.

Face it, BBGS is dead. BBBS have more personality than SBU or SBS.

Not forgotten

Ask me, if I ever had the chance to relive a year, which year I would pick?

The answer is - 1999.

Ask me, if there's one thing I would do if I ever had the chance to turn back time, what would it be?

The answer - getting myself enrolled in BBGS for 5 full years.

BBGS. Bukit Bintang Girls School. Nisi dominus frustra. It's been years since I've left school, but the school has yet to leave me completely. And you know what's even more ironic? I spent only a year there - just one year. Yet, my loyalty towards BBGS burns deeper and longer than any of the schools I've been to previously. It can't even beat university. I spent four years studying in another school prior to BBGS, yet that one short stint is the memory that is still fresh and green in my heart. That one short stint has turned me into a dedicated BBGSian, as though that was the only school I have ever attended all my life and nowhere else. Everytime someone asks me, which school I was from, I'd automatically answer: "BBGS", as if I'd been there all my life.

You can imagine how disappointed I was with the corporate decision to literally scrape off our alma mater off the face of the Earth. Progress. That's what they called it. I remember the times I drove by the school site after it had been emptied out of schoolgirls, completely devoid of Life, noting how the grand old main corpus which had stood there stoically for the past 100 years slowly decaying into a shell, then a rubble, a pile of concrete skeletons and finally dust. The last time I passed by the site with my dad behind the wheel, I remember blinking back tears. I was touched and surprised when my Dad peered through his window as he drove past, looking towards the spot, unconsciously clicking his tongue disapprovingly and shaking his head sadly. For that I am so grateful.

Years later, and my loyalty towards BBGS has not faded. You might think it's strange, but I carry the '99 Yearbook with me abroad. It's been with me while I was in Russia. I'm in Scotland now, and it's sitting right here on my shelf, miles away from home, just like me. I never get tired of flipping through the pages, spotting friends and reminiscing. I Google for BBGS on random occasions, hoping that there might be some more information I could dig up about my school, to bring back that school spirit that I miss so much. Unfortunately, there isn't much I could find, nothing new that I could discover. I still maintain the class website, albeit irregularly. The project, initiated by three of my classmates and then handed to me, started out as something to focus on for me to keep boredom away. Today, it is a labour of love.

Reading Dayang's post made me realized a few things. The one sore point with me is that our country does not place value in old heritage buildings and history. Such great pity. Our school was one of the pioneering schools in the country that was dedicated to educating women. That fact itself should have lent a strong credibility to save itself from the destruction it had faced. Any other countries in the world, the US and the UK particularly, would have launched themselves into a fierce legal battle to protect this building should BBGS was opened there. But she wasn't. She was born right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The school had pride itself in producing generations of women, successful women, just as it had promised in the anthem. I've spoken to a girl whose sisters, mum and aunts had all attended BBGS, whose grandmother was a schoolgirl there as well. Amazing, isn't it? The other sore point with me is the school name change (Sri Bintang Utara), the motto change (the Ministry demanded that the Latin phrase should be "Malaysianised"... if so, how come St. John's and VI still get to keep their Latin motto?), and the transformation of the girls school into a coed. I wonder, if BBGS was still around today, perhaps it could have been our very own Cheltenham.

May 2001. We were all standing in the school ground, desperately trying to make our protests heard and petitions read. I can't remember how many people showed up that day, but I remember there were a lot of women and girls thronging the streets, making their way towards the school, much to the surprise of passers-by and tourists around that area. Former alumni went around taking pictures, trying to preserve the school in 2D. As I walked slowly down the corridor looking for my friends, I remember walking past a young family of four - a pair of husband and wife and their two little daughters. I remember the mother bending down and hearing her speak to her daughters, "Look, there's Mummy's class!". There was such a pride in her voice, that I was immediately rooted to the spot, watching as the two little girls peered curiously into the Biology lab. There was a lump in my throat at that scene.

2007. Now I am sitting here, facing my laptop typing this piece. I never get tired thinking of BBGS. I never get tired talking about the school. And I never get tired of reminiscing. I often wondered what Life would have been like for me had I attended BBGS throughout my schooling years, wondered what would have been if I had never stepped into BBGS as a student, wondered if I could have been any different than the person I am today or would I have been the same? I'd always believed that BBGS was somewhat responsible in forming me to become a stronger person with a sense of pride. I was a different girl when I first came to BBGS, and I was a completely different person when I left. I remember the first time I tried to sing the school anthem, trying to follow the verses, I thought to myself that this was the most beautiful school song I've ever heard. My only regret is that I feel like I hadn't done enough for the school while I was there.

I wonder, the day when I have my own daughter, will I ever be able to find a school like this for her to enrol?

Like I said, I've left BBGS for years now but BBGS has never left me. And I'm thankful for that.

Melancholy Revival

A melancholy mood hit me after reading Deb's entry.

I used to hate it when i pass through Bukit Bintang. I hate it so much that i try my hardest to avoid using the roads there that would lead me to remember the times we all had. From waiting for the buses to come by at Star Hill to the ghost stories in the old surau at Prouse Wing and the old sick bay at Clinic Block.

There was a time, when i used to cry when i glanced at the old spot where the school once stood. There was also a time when i physically abused anyone not from BB who mere mentioned BBGS in the slightest negative tone.

And when it was temporary used as a parking lot, i used to park my car and walk around between other cars to stand where the library used to be, where we used to sit by the drain to have our meals during the '30 minutes' of recess, where we sat at the priviledged Pathway while waiting for our friends or finish our homeworks,or where the science labs were. I stroll around the graveled parking lot until the 'parking lot jaga' would eye me suspiciously as if this 5'3" girl is contemplating grand theft auto.

But now, i dont mind driving past. I dont mind glancing at another fugly building being built at where my alma mater use to stand proudly. I dont mind not because i try to block the ugliness of human nature and the greed that led them to tear down a heritage building. I dont mind because i chose to ignore that part of my heart that still cry at the thought of the walls that helped me stand up.

When i was studying in Melbourne, i envied the people there. Mostly due to their strong conservation of heritage buildings. They built Melbourne Central, a shopping mall and an underground train station around an old historic tower, The Shot Tower. They even made an architectural marvel from their design of Melb Central's cone roof to further protect the tower from weather damage. While i was having my required dose of Strawberry Waffles and Dark Chocolate at MaxBrenner at QV, i used to admire how the architects design the square so flawlessly to encorporate the old Queen Victoria Women's Centre (once the Queen Victoria Hospital) and made the square a modern artpiece where the old and the new contrasted each other. Since QV now stands on where the hospital once stood, they further demonstrate their commitment to history by naming the lanes in honour of nurses (Red Cape Lane because the nurses wore red capes), doctor, surgeon and others related to the site's history.

There were a lot of what ifs and whys in my head. Why dont Malaysian honour history as much as they do? Why cant they preserve BBGS and turn it into an open air shopping destination? What if they modify the classrooms into boutique shops, and cafes? How unique it would have been if we were able to stroll down Office Block while hopping in and out of boutiques? A place in the middle of the city where we can enjoy a glass of teh tarik in the middle of Prouse Wing and Clinic Block? Why didnt they at least, at least preserve the front facade of the building and build another skyscaper behind it?

Were the walls detoriating? rotting unknowingly to us? crumbling in the edges? Is that why they had to tear it down? Is it so bad until no conservation work could be done? We wouldnt knownow, would we?

What I do know, is that greed over the value of the land led to the government selling it off. And a developer with limited imagination over its architectural and heritage value the building had or the architectural achievement it could have been. I know that it would be a place Malaysian would be proud to bring friends overseas to. I know it would have been a tourist and local destination. I know in my heart because ive travelled the world, looking for places with heart, soul and a story to tell. Not another stainless steel structure.

Truly BBGSian,
Dayang

Ps: sorry if the post is too long, but i guess i have been pending it up for far too long.
Pps: I support change of name of blog, because me no from 5sc1. :)

An outsider looking in

I was back in KL for a visit and I passed by our old school. After a three[ish] year absence, I was quite dismayed to see the highrised buildings that replaced it. I hoped (as many people did) that the old buildings would have been preserved (i.e. as heritage buildings) but it was not so. But i think it was inevitable that the school we so love would not last forever. It seemed only yesterday that i was in the class, trying to pass some notes to the other end of the room without the teacher noticing. I do miss the old days where we always had to line up outside and have the prefect check our nails and pockets, etc. To be honest, I do not miss the country or the food. There are not many I am closed with and I'm sorry because I don't remember the names of most of you. I recognise faces, though. I know this blog is specifically for the 5 Science 1 possé so if you're not happy for me to be posting here, let me know. Otherwise, I will be trying to post something once in a while.

I'm currently studying my final year of physiotherapy in the University of Melbourne. I'm slightly overwhelmed at how fast the years have passed and I will have to be starting work soon. I just came home from a holiday to Bangkok, KL and Singapore. Travelling alone is pretty fun, if you're a bit of a loner like me and enjoy meeting people. I recommend it; but read up on your destination and learn a little bit of the language before you go. It will help heaps. Right about now, I'm trying to occupy my time with earning enough so I can buy a car and support myself, catching up with friends, organising parties, cleaning up my room (I just recently moved back home) and catching up on some reading. My band, gravitate, released our album last year and if you'd like a copy, please go to tigerMusic to order. Please shoot them an email to ask if they send to your country.

If you'd like to get in contact with me, leave me a comment on my blog with your email address and i will get back to you as soon as i can. Oh, and please explain how I know you because sometimes, my memory escapes me. Try a few times if it doesn't work the first time around. =Þ

Shaping up

I must say, I'm pretty proud of the way the class website is shaping up. I'm finally building it into the design that I've always wanted, all thanks to Macromedia Dreamweaver. Wish I had discovered it a lot sooner. Well, the good news is that the website is definitely taking form, slowly and surely... having a look and design that we all could identify with. As Faiz had pointed out, the website definitely had the look and feel of a yearbook, and that's exactly the effect that I wanted to achieve.

I'm just glad that my Winter break has not gone to waste entirely. In this span of three weeks, I've managed to relocate our blog and redesigning the class website. True, my eyes are going a little bleary now, no thanks to staring at the laptop screen for hours to end, but I've finally cleared my guilty conscience. The class website is like a baby to me, and neglecting it the way I did for the last couple of years had put quite a strain on my conscience. It's an important portal for us all, one of the best ways for us to keep in touch and look back and remember how we all came together.

I've also been surfing the net for any additional stuff I could use for the website. It seems that SBU had redesigned and relocated their website as well. They've put up some pictures of our dear old alma mater, which I've stolen to put up on our website, he he. Other than that, I'm disappointed to find that there's nothing much to find. It's a little disheartening since I feel that our school is very much a part of Kuala Lumpur, having been at its heart once upon a time. There's just that small Wiki entry, but that's it. Maybe we can change that, someday.

Okay, I need to air myself out. I've been sitting in front of the comp far too long and I need to stretch my butt and stretch these crickety carpal-tunnel induced limbs. Just a quick post to keep things flowing. Once again, I've redesigned and retooled some of the things on the 5Sc1 Website that I was not happy about earlier. It seems that the Shoutbox is quite popular since it's simple to use and easy on the eyes. I've installed a different version complete with a timestamp so it won't be too confusing on who's posting when.

Web designing has come a long way since I started picking it up in high school. It was a lot easier and perhaps simpler back then, but now with the development of Open Source and CSS, it's getting a little confusing and too sophisticated for an 'old-timer' like me. Web-designing has come a long way. If anyone could give me a link on easy-to-read online tutorials, your help will be greatly appreciated.

Till next time. Until then, keep on hitting these sites. After a long struggle with my memory, I've finally remembered my username and password to this blog! I'd like to apologize for the delay in updates. A lot of the stuff are strewn all over in both my old hard drive and my new laptop, so it's going to take me ages to transfer them back and forth.

I need some suggestions how to keep the blog and sites running and get more traffic and also info... such as news or pictures. Basically, I need suggestions and help in keeping them alive, period.

Just for fun, I felt like adding random informations on random BBGS alumnis I found on the Net: Malaysians Abroad.

I also found a short International Herald Tribune article about our beloved alma mater: Malaysia Begins To 'Wire' Its Classrooms.

On a side note, interestingly enough, I found a short Wiki stub on BBGS. Regardless to the title "5Sc1 Class of '99 BBGS", we welcome any alumni of BBGS to this blog. I started this blog with hopes to continue keeping our class website alive, and at the same time looking for a smoother interaction with visitors. I am hoping that a blog would be a lot easier to keep and maintain compared to the clunky HTML coding I have to fight with every time I update the website. So... stay tune for more updates (?).

And also, as a polite reminder, as a webmaster, I would be interested to know what each of you have been up to. It'll be nice if someone would pop in an e-mail with details that she would like to share with fellow ex-classmates... so I could post it, along with gathering suggestions and such.

Btw, I would also be interested in pictures of the old school building. I'd like to collect and post them online. The rarer the better, if you know what I mean.

Signing off for now,
Webmistress M
